Lone Way at ECU Alumni Exhibition

IMG_6975 copyThis magnificent piece of artwork that I hold close to my heart was shipped to Greenville NC early August. It’s more than just a single tree in a field at dawn, more like a reflection of major parts in my life. The image itself originally film, was one that was submitted into my portfolio to receive my acceptance into the Photography department at ECU. The adventure started that day back in February 2010 started at 4:30am. I decided to just jump in my car with my camera and about 7 rolls film and drive east towards the coast. I wasn’t taking a direct route just driving east, about an hour or so into the drive the sun began to rise. The soft glow was at the horizon. I had came across this field so I quickly pulled off the road. In the large flat field was a lonely tree in the middle, one ditch that lead way to the trunk, and a soft glow of a becoming sunrise behind the tree. Perfect setting, even the little reflection of light off the water in the ditch. Sometimes photography gives us those magical timings. “One does not make or take a photograph. they create a photograph. “

Three years later while in grad School at Savannah College of art and design I had a printing class. Very interesting class that dealt with printing images on different mediums. A technique that’s so different from paper was printing onto metal. After coating metal with matte paint/gel, you could set the printer to the width of metal and send it through. The substance that covered the surface, allowed the ink to hold on to the metal. Dry time was about a week. The results are just perfection. Towards the end of the class, final submissions was a piece of art work completely finished. A common motto with me “go big or go home”. Using my an old favorite image, that was converted film negative to digital scan.  I printed the image on to a sheet of metal at the size of 40 x 20. I was so happy! It looked incredible. I let the metal print dry for about 5 days before I lightly distressed it, and added to a wood board. Complete.
The artwork has marked two important stages in my life, as I was working towards a BFA and MA degrees. As I packed it away in a box to ship off. I reflected on all this and the importance the image and artwork had been.
I titled this piece Lone way.

The metal print has been in the Wellington Gray Gallery of East Carolina University for the 2015 Alumni Exhibition. I attended the opening reception for the ECU Alumni Exhibition, so wonderful to see work from so many past students from all over. The show will continue until September 26th.
